Mary, Mother of God Coloring Page

As always, when I haven't done a coloring page in a while, I feel stiff and out of practice and I think it shows. But, truth be told, I could have worked for weeks on this one and still not done this beautiful image of Our Lady true justice. I just love the colors and the softness. Happy New Year to you all!

12 Days of Christmas Cooking

Ruth had a great idea and my brain just couldn't leave it alone. She came up with gifts to give to represent the 12 days of Christmas. I thought I would try to focus on incorporating the 12 Days of Christmas song into a menu plan. It's too late for this year but I wanted to record it here to give myself a better chance of remembering it next year. I tried to avoid desserts since we don't need any help in that department this time of year but some just couldn't be helped. Feel free to add your suggestions below:

First day of Christmas: Anything with pears, how about~Poached Orange Pears

Second Day of Christmas: Chocolate Turtle Brownie Pie or Turtle Bean Soup (not sure I am up to Mock Turtle Soup)

Third Day of Christmas: French Egg and Bacon Sandwich or simply Egg Salad

Fourth Day of Christmas: Bird’s Nest Egg Salad or Bird’s Nest Pie

Fifth Day of Christmas: Onion Rings or Cinnamon Coffee Ring

Sixth Day of Christmas: If you don't feel like cooking a goose how about toast or English muffins with gooseberry jam

Seventh Day of Christmas: probably more involved that the other recipes but sooooo cute~ Swan Crème Puffs

Eighth Day of Christmas: milkshakes, of course!

Ninth Day of Christmas: Dancing Chicken on the Grill or Dancing Lemonade Chicken if you don't have beer on hand (don't forget Dancing Spaghetti~ this is a science experiment)

Tenth Day of Christmas: Lord Baltimore Cake or you could make Lord Woolton Pie. If you do, please tell me what "swedes" are.

Eleventh Day of Christmas: You could make your own Pirouette cookies (they look like little pipes) or let Pepperidge Farm make them for you and serve with piping hot cocoa!

Twelfth Day of Christmas: Oven Fried Chicken Drumsticks or any other drumstick recipe

Husband and I had lots of fun looking up recipes and tossing around ideas. We found it funny that just about every character in the song could be made into an alcoholic beverage. Turtle Punch anyone? No? How about a Hot Piper?

Christmas Crackers

Do you do Christmas crackers? I had never heard of them until I met Husband. We have had so much fun adopting this mostly British tradition into our family. But, after many years of collecting tiny trinkets and forcing ourselves to laugh at jokes only a true Welshman could love, this year we decided to fill our own. Maybe next year we will actually make our own but for now, these unfilled crackers will do the trick. But what to fill them with that would be small enough to fit inside and yet useful in some way?Bookmarks! I made bookmarks for each child using personalized charms and black elastic cord. Proper instructions can be found here. Husband hand picked a joke for each person plus added a stick of Juicy Fruit to sweeten the surprise. The paper crowns were already tucked inside so once I tie up the open end, these babies are good to go!

Let me just add that these bookmarks were so easy to make (no sewing, no gluing, just cutting and tying) and so handy to have. I made some extras to have around until we open our crackers on New Years Eve.I used an old St. Francis medal and a pretty cross that came from a broken key chain. Even the beads from the key chain made a nice one. I could see some of you amazingly skilled beaders out there really running with this idea! Merry Christmas!

The Surprise Hits of the Season

The children enjoyed everything from the treats to the toys to the thoughtful gifts they made/picked for each other. Some of the surprise hits...Danielle Bean's recipe for homemade playdough in their favorite colors given to each child with a bundle of plastic cookie cutters in fun shapes. The red batch was scented with peppermint oil! Danielle, please tell your mom that her recipe is going to be a Christmas staple in our house from now on!
Homemade dolls for dollys.

The Professor made these peg dolls to give to Sunshine and Shortcake. He made them to match their own dolls and I used scraps to create little dresses for the peg dolls. The ear piercing screams of girlie delight and the two-sister-tackle-hug might not have been appreciated by a typical 10 year old boy but the smile on his face was pretty big so I guess The Professor didn't mind.

Now, lest you think that we are suffering from Little House Christmas Fever you should know that The Professor has only surfaced for food and water while putting together the massive Lego set that Grammie surprised him with and that Batman is BigBoy's new favorite Superhero so we are well within our recommended holiday requirement of plastic.

OH... and my favorite gift? Has to be the Lego set! Why? Because it means that I can sneak off with the next two Ranger's Apprentice books we gave to The Professor and he won't even notice as long as they are back by reading time! They are really great books! Thanks to my Aussie friend, Erin, for the recommendation!

So what did your kids (or you) go nuts for that you didn't expect (or maybe you did)? I'd love to know. Merry Christmas!

Sick Day

Don't sick days usually follow snow days? Shortcake is down for the count with fever and an upset stomach and I am watching the others like they are ticking time bombs. My mom is on her way and the children are hoping they will get to play with her and not just have her hold a wet cloth to their forehead. So with that, I am signing off for this week to go clean bathrooms and do laundry and get ready to celebrate the birth of Our Lord however He might want me to. Take care and stay warm!

SNOW DAY!!!

Husband is off for the rest of the week because he won't be off next week :( so we are declaring today a Snow Day. Real snow days do occur naturally here in Texas but we can't count on one every year so we are making our own. On the agenda:1. Create our own snow storm in the windows. I made this one last night so the kids will get to work on their bedroom windows today. Warning: This project is so addictive you will find yourself looking at every window in your house and wondering if there are any 24 hour office supply stores. There aren't, just to let you know, but Wal-mart carries the 3/4 inch round labels and they are open 24 hours. I'm just sayin'.

2. We were so delighted by Joann's pictures and the simplicity of this project that we made our own last night so that they would be ready for Snow Day today. Some of us experimented with metallic pipe cleaners. The pink and red ones changed the color of the Borax solution but not the green or silver. Hmmmm?

3. Some sort of snow snack. I am thinking maybe Sugar Snow made with shaved ice or Snowman Meringues or maybe just Marshmallow Men. Suggestions welcome!

4. A snowball fight for sure! The giant basket of white socks sitting in my bedroom will do nicely and no, I'm not posting a picture of those!

5. Some serious snuggle time under piles of blankets with good books and hot chocolate all around. Isn't that all you people north of the Red River do this time of year?

Have a great day (snowy or not) and if you don't hear from me for the rest of the week just read that first sentence again and you'll know why!!! :)

Happy St. Lucy's Day

Star boys and Lucias at every plate

Yarn doll St. Lucys for the girls

St. Lucy doing a jig?

Sunshine's sweet Lucy doll in her arms with a sweet roll on her plate! Mmmmmmm!

I am hoping that the plethora of homemade decorations will make up for the utter lack of homemade goodies this year. I am nursing a strained muscle in my neck/shoulder and just didn't have it in me this year to make this delicious bread which is making the internet rounds. I hope you all had a lovely morning and if you are reading this in your jammies, I hope you get to stay that way!:)

Under Her Starry Mantle

~The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe~

~Our table set and ready for the fiesta~

The children decorated the table cloth with pretty foil stars and we are floating 2 pink rose candles next to a Strawberry Rose Cake. We also made Elizabeth's Juan Diego with a fold open tilma and decorated it with mini pictures of our own Guadalupe roses. Pretty blue plates and rose printed napkins finish off the table. Now I have kids pining for Mexican hot chocolate just waiting for Daddy to come home!

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, pray for us!

St. Lucy Coloring Pages

I couldn't decide between a picture of St. Lucy and a picture of a girl dressed for St. Lucy's Day so I am passing that indecision along to you. The first is based on Matthew Alderman's St. Lucy of Syracuse. This is a gorgeous image of St. Lucy. Go look at it and then spend some time looking at all of the other amazing art work over at The Catholic Illustrator's Guild. I really appreciated Mr. Alderman's depiction of St. Lucy without the dish of eyeballs. (See #1 here.) Plus, I don't think I could bring myself to draw eyeballs outside of their sockets. Ewwww. I can't believe I just typed that.

The second picture is based on this piece of clip art which can be found at the end of this description of a Santa Lucia celebration in Cleveland.

So now you get to decide and I don't have to!

Christmas Carols

Evann tagged me for what proved to be a very challenging meme.

The Rules:
If you were trapped on a desert island and it was Christmas and all you had was a small generator, Christmas lights for your coconut tree, an endless supply of Christmas cookies and eggnog (or hot chocolate), your CD player and 6 Christmas CDs , which 6 albums would you want them to be?

Wow. Whole albums? That is tough. First, I should confess that my collection is severely lacking. I have lots of favorites sung by individual artists, but I don't know that I have favorite albums. So, I will do my very best. If you are looking to stock your Christmas music shelf with suggestions, just know that not every song on these discs is my favorite.

6. We Need A Little Christmas ~ Andy Williams
Not Andy at his best but it is only one I own. I am sure one of his older ones is better but that's OK so long as I get to hear him sing the title song and It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Those are my favorites from him. Incidentally, am I the only one who fondly remembers the special he did with the NBC kids? Please say no.

5. Bruce Springsteen's Santa Claus is Coming to Town (single song)
My secret shame! I know he is off-key but when isn't he? It's a fun song! And I crack up every time I hear him laughing at Clarence Clemons' "Ho, ho, ho!" Movin' on.

4. Veggie Tales: A Very Veggie Christmas
Seriously. Not just because the kids want this played non-stop. I really like the calypso version of Angels We Have Heard on High. Weird, I know, but you already knew that from #5.

3. In the Christmas Mood II ~ The Glen Miller Orchestra
Anything Glen Miller is welcome in my house.

2. Have A Holly Jolly Christmas ~ Burl Ives
You either love it or you hate it.

1. Carpenters Christmas Portrait
Hands down, best Christmas album ever. I can always count on this one to put me in a Christmas mood. I remember my mom listening to this while she did her Christmas baking combined with a little nip in the air (sometimes provided by the air conditioner). It definitely sets the mood.

I desperately need to work on our collection. This year we focused on books. Next year it will have to be music. Suggestions welcome!!!

Now, Red Cardigan has a post about a survey done over the pond and she asks...

Christmas Carols~

1. Love 'em, hate 'em, tolerate 'em, or...? Love 'em!

2. Policy: none before Christmas, none before Thanksgiving, or...? None before Thanksgiving.

3. Favorite? Favorites, if you've got more than one? O Holy Night, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Silent Night...just to name a few.

4. Least favorite? Drives you batty/hate it/turn it off if it comes on the radio? The one about the kid buying shoes for his dying mother. Santa Baby, especially the Madonna version and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

5. Caroling door to door in neighborhood? Ever done it/would do it? Wouldn't even consider it? Did it as a kid.

6. Funniest kids' rendition, if any? Veggie Tales version of the 12 Days of Christmas. It's dough, wrapped around...meat!

7. Most inappropriate carol ever heard in a church setting (Catholic or otherwise)? I don't remember which song they played, but one church programmed the outside bells to play Christmas songs as we were leaving Mass and the first one up was something Frosty the Snowman or Jingle Bells or something. Church bells ringing out Jingle Bells? It just doesn't work.

8. The one foreign language carol I know (or know best) is...? I used to know O Tannenbaum in German and Silent Night but these days it's Feliz Navidad.

9. Carol that perplexes you the most? Most of the really British ones like Walking in a Winter Wonderland... the whole Parson Brown snowman thing confuses me.

10. Carol your whole family will sing? I don't know but now I am going to have to find out!

How about you? Inquiring minds want to know!

Our Lady of Guadalupe Coloring Page

I am going to post this now for anyone who might be celebrating the feast of St. Juan Diego today or so that you can print if off early for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday. We have plans to have a Mexican Fiesta, decorate a blue tablecloth with gold stars (I know it should be a green tablecloth but all of the green tablecloths were psychedelic), and make this craft. So here is Our Lady of Guadalupe to color or craft with as you choose.

A Quiltie and a Cookie Hive

Our cookie hive from yesterday's celebration of St. Ambrose...
And this afternoon we are delivering this basket of baked goods to my SIL tucked inside of a winter Quiltie for the sweet little girl she delivered last week. Dinner for a mom home with a wee one is lovely, but when you have little children to take care of along with that new baby, I have found that baked goods are usually missed the most (and 4 out of 5 toddlers agree!).
Shortcake made the baby hat you see in the picture above after we spent an afternoon with some amazing friends. A sweet girl (who is only 11 years old) taught us how to knit using a round loom and we have been going round and round and round ever since. Baby hats, dolly hats, Christmas presents and more! Thank you, friends, for introducing us to another avenue of creativity!

Feast of the Immaculate Conception Coloring Page

I love this picture of Our Lady but I don't know anything about the artist. If you do, please let me know. I did not include the background in my coloring version. It would have been too tedious and taken too much of my time. As you all know this is a very busy time of year for everyone but especially us moms! Maybe your kids can come up with a creative way to place her in a grotto or add one in the background. I'd love to see what they come up with! Have a lovely feast day!

Feast of St. Ambrose

Things are buzzing around here! You can read my post about our traditional cookies for St. Ambrose over at Catholic Cuisine. I posted these from last year since we probably won't make ours in time for me to get a good shot of them today. We are running a little behind over here do to a musical diversion but it was worth it. We spent our afternoon listening to some sweet singing from some family members who definitely did St. Ambrose proud!

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

In this post below, Kim F. recommended this resource for all your St. Nicholas coloring needs and boy was she right. Warning: you will spend hours and hours over there if you aren't careful! Set your timer!

So, I did not make a St. Nicholas coloring page and really can't decide which of these fifteen I like best. I'm kind of leaning toward the three in the middle. Anyway, I hope your shoes were filled with chocolate and that you have a very happy St. Nicholas Day!

Call your dentist!

I offer that as a warning before you read this post because these things will rot your teeth just by lookin' at them!

If your youngest daughter's handwriting book asks her to write the words "popping purple popcorn" and you get the urge to make that lesson come to life, my advice to you is... fight it!

My kids love popcorn but have never tried popcorn balls. I figured they wouldn't be a huge hit because they were most likely going to be sticky and my kids are not fond of foods that stick to their teeth, the roof of their mouth or their fingers. But, in the shallow parts of my mommy brain was a little voice swimming around saying "but we could make them purple... you know... for Advent!" Heh, heh, heh. Next time I hear that little voice he is getting put on an inflatable raft with a slow leak headed for the deep end.

They were bad I tell you! Like something you would expect to get from a dirty concession stand at your brother's little league baseball game. But your kids will probably love them!

So, if your dentist doesn't already love you because he is godfather to your oldest child and you would like for him to remember your family fondly as he retires to a castle in the mountains, then by all means make your kids some of these... just have plenty of wet wipes handy.

And a new toothbrush.

And Dr. Drill's phone number.

Colored Popcorn Balls
  • 9 cups popped popcorn
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 (10 ounce) package large marshmallows
  • 1 sm. box fruit flavored gelatin mix, any flavor
Place popcorn in a large bowl and set aside. In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in gelatin until dissolved. Pour mixture over popcorn and toss to coat. When cool enough to handle, lightly butter hands and quickly shape into balls.

*The grape gelatin turned the marshmallow mixture a very pale shade of purple so I made a mixture of pink and blue sugar crystal sprinkles to roll the balls in. They did actually combine to create a purplish hue (like pointillism on a popcorn ball). But they were about as tasty as that sounds.

Sea World 2008

So I was telling my MIL about our trip to Sea World and when I mentioned that they advertised "Holiday Shows" during the week of Thanksgiving she asked, "Which holiday would that be?" Really, who can blame her? In today's world where people refuse to sell Christmas trees or Christmas gifts, Christians feel like our holiday is the elephant in the living room. Everyone is celebrating it, but we're not allowed to talk about it. So, I was pleasantly pleased to be able to give my MIL a positive report regarding these holiday shows. They were Christmas shows! And they even said so!!!

While the sea lions were trying to help their trainer find her Christmas cheer, there was a Miracle being celebrated over at Shamu's stadium. They opened the show with Christmas caroling singing a mix of religious and secular songs. Then we turned our attention to the JumboTron to see the wise men seeking the newborn King and to listen to the announcer talk about the miracle of the child born to save us all. Wow. It really was a beautiful show.
But, the dolphin show was a particular favorite.

Due to the heavy acrobatics and diving skills in this show, it was the same one you can see year round. There is no way a Santa hat would survive a 30 foot drop! There is a man who performs a funny water skit before the show starts and then acts as a "silly master of ceremonies" throughout. BigBoy dubbed him the Chicken Man since he pretended to be too scared to dive into the pool at one point.BigBoy loved him! He wanted his picture taken with the Chicken Man afterwards so we made our way through the crowd in order to snap a shot. While they were smiling for the camera......this little baby beluga came up to the glass to say hello. BigBoy, when telling the story later says, "That's the baby beluga that wanted to be in my picture! I love him." We waved and signed "whale" at him (I am assuming "beluga" has to be fingerspelled) and even taught the Chicken Man how to sign whale (he asked).

Actually, thanks to Signing Time #9 The Zoo Train, we signed to the penguins, the dolphins, the star fish, the ducks and the sharks from a distance though (too scary for BigBoy and too far to walk for Mom and Grammie!) Hey, we're not wimps! We had just been walking since 9:30 that morning and thought 7 hours was plenty!

Thank you Grammie for a lovely Thanksgiving memory that is threatening to become a tradition!

P.S. That plug up above for Signing Time is my gentle reminder that awesome, educational Christmas gifts are just a click away!!! We have been so blessed by the two sets we own and I know they would benefit so many other families! I don't get a commission, I just really love their products!
